March 2023

It’s been nigh upon eight months since the last one of these.

Hope 2023 is treating you well. I’m playing at the Baked Potato this Sunday with the Teryn Ré Big Band! If you’ve never seen (or heard) her group, here is a golden opportunity to change that status. That’s Sunday, March 5th, with sets at 8pm and 10pm. More info here.

Wow was I stoked to be a part of this one! Plays Planet Caravan is the latest release from Chris Schlarb’s Psychic Temple (unless you count a reissue of the great Plays Music For Airports). It’s adventurous, large-group improvisation. It’s a reimagined Black Sabbath classic paired with an original jam. It’s joyous music created with people I love. And it’s an Aquarium Drunkard best album of 2022. What more can you ask for? Available for purchase on Bandcamp or streaming through Apple Music and Spotify.

In Hollywood news, I was in a movie! A couple summers ago, I got hired to be a background musician in Babylon from writer/director Damien Chazelle (of Whiplash and La La Land fame)! The film portrays a hyper-stylized version of Hollywood in the 1920s and 30s. If you look hard enough in the “Singing in the Rain" scene you can catch me pretending to play an ancient tenor sax of questionable origin. Plus I can finally say I was in a movie with Eric Roberts. Special thanks to Sam Webster for this opportunity!

In June, I shared news that my second LP was recorded. The next time you receive a newsletter, I’ll have much more to share, including the release of the first single!
