Today is a momentous day because I am officially announcing the release of my next album!
Flight is a reimagining of the music of Charlie Parker featuring two ensembles of the finest musicians this side of the 210 Freeway (and Louisiana resident Dave Easley so west of the Mississippi). To celebrate this announcement, BIG EGO Records is releasing “Donna Lee” as a single! You can stream it on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, and Tidal, plus I am taking preorders for vinyl and CD.
Someone once said writing about music is like dancing about architecture and boy is it a struggle to describe your own work. After tracking this take, Jay Bellerose commented that it sounded “Fellini-esque”. I’d like to imagine we took this barnburner of a song and molded it into a short film of Bird and the great Italian director on a farm somewhere out in the heartland. Better yet, it’s Donna Lee as a freakin’ waltz?!
There will be a second single, as well as the full album, so I’ll have plenty of time to express my gratitude, but this being the country side, I’d like to thank Chris Schlarb for producing, mixing, and guiding this project, Devin O’Brien for engineering and documenting the session, JJ Golden for mastering the album, and the great musicians Jay Bellerose (drums), Dave Easley (pedal steel guitar), Philip Glenn (violin) and Anthony Shadduck (bass) who perform expertly on this record.
